Poor DV-AVI Saved Movie Quality

I've read many of the posts about poor video quality and still haven't found
quite what I'm looking for. Here's my situation:

I have a high quality AVI file captured from a DV camcorder. I have tested
the quality by opening up the AVI file in windows media player (and others
too)--nice and crisp. When I add it to a collection and the timeline, there
is a noticeable drop in quality (I've heard this is normal 15fps for quick
editing).
However, when I save the movie file to my computer as DV-AVI (NTSC) the
quality is poor--the same as the preview. It appears grainy and blury in
areas.

Any suggestions and help would be much appreciated.

GN,
I read your prob with moviemaker and I too am experiencing the same. I have
a sony camcorder...the video looks good on the camcorder screen but on the mm
screen it is quite pixelated. It never used to be like this and the only
change I can think of is the fact I now run two LCD monitors....but this
shouldn't really effect anything. When I save this movie it too is pixelated
and not good to watch.

Speed, I figured out my dilemma.

When I imported my video into the collection, I had checked the box that
asks if you want to split the video into clips. This was my problem--as
splitting the high-quality AVI file creates smaller, lesser-quality, ones.
Unchecking the box when importing them was the key. Now my video exports
perfectly. Hope this helps you!
