Trim an .mpg

This question has been asked before, but I haven't found the answer.

Is there a (win or dos) freeware which will trim unwanted footage from
the beginning or end of an mpg mpeg file? It could even be command
line, because I can use other tools (virtualDub-Mpeg2) to determine
exactly how many frames to cut.

I found a reference to TMPG12a being able to do this. However,
although this program seemed happy to load the file as the main
project, and displayed the first frame, when using the Join/Trim part
of the MPEG Tools section, it claimed the file was "not an MPEG file".

According to VirtualDubMPEG-2, the file is 352x480 29.970 fps, DAR=2,
48kHz stereo, 256 kbps layer II audio.

MPEG Mediator ver. 1.5 might do this. I've used it to crop a movie to
fit in a window. There's no longer a home page for the program to the
best of my knowledge, but here's a download link for the program:

Be sure to scan for viruses, but I've downloaded stuff from this site
before and caught nothing.

Open the file with Avicodec (http://avicodec.duby.info/) to see if it's
MPEG or not. From your story it seems that you want to clip an MPEG2 file.
This should be possible with TMPGenc12a. Other options are Chopper XP (I
couldn't get a precise cut with it) and Mpeg2schnitt (a pain to figure out
how to use it)
