Tried EVERYTHING to delete history...

Amber

I have done all I know how to do to delete the history.
Last week I was looking at a baby website and porn popped
up. Now it has those addresses in my address bar and when
I delete temp IE files and history, it is still there. I
tried deleting the index.dat file and it won't let me (I
am the admin on my computer). I restarted, went to safe
mode and logged on as Administrator and it isn't showing
that there is anything to erase under my computer name
under documents and settings... need help!!!

If you want to remove "names" from the address bar Right-Click on the
Taskbar>Properties>start menu programs>clear documents menu button>OK out.

For Google (for example) dropdown box searches. Control panel>IE
Options>Content tab>autocomplete> clear forms>OK>OK>OK out.

Let's see if I understand you correctly then. You stated that in the address
bar there are undesirable sites listed? Do you mean that there are
pre-existing unwanted sites automatically entered in the address bar right
from the get-go?

OR, do you mean that they show up when you click the dropdown arrow on the
address bar?

Is that the case? If that is the case, the first directions I gave you
*should* remove every one of them, and clicking the dropdown arrow should
present you with a completely empty field. The same *should* happen if one
accesses IE Options>Clear history (which of course does more than remove the
address bar dropdown list entries.) If that is not happening then something
is amiss.

Your Operating Sytem is XP I presume. Try this:
Unable to delete AutoComplete entries

When you are unable to delete the AutoComplete entries after selecting:
Clear Forms
Internet Options | Content [tab] | AutoComplete [button] | Clear Forms
[button]

Use the above method to delete the History folder as the AutoComplete
entries are actually stored in the hidden History\index.dat file. [more
info] (also applies to IE 6)

DelTypedURL [right-click and select: Save Target As]
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelTypedURL.inf

Removes the URL's from the Address Bar drop-down list without deleting the
Internet Explorer History. To use: right-click and select: Install
Note: this does not remove entries entered via AutoComplete.

Otherwise read here:

It is an unnecessarily (IMO) convolute feature of IE which has many facets,
amongst which is Auto-complete and "Auto-Suggest".

If you don't want addresses showing up by "Auto-Suggest" in the *address
bar*, Disable that feature in the IE Options> Advanced tab> use inline
autocomplete> web addresses and /or Windows explorer>Apply >OK out. If you
don't want these previous entries to show up at all if you should re-enable
the feature, then you must clear history.

If you don't want them at all. IE Options> Content tab>
Autocomplete>un-check web addresses>OK>OK out.

When in any of the aforementioned tabs of IE, click the "?" and then click
the item you wish to know about. A "Tooltip" box will appear and give you
descriptions of each one you select to know about.

There is also an .inf file called DelTypedURL which does this without the
need to clear the History, but doesn't apply to "Auto-Suggest".

LuckyStrike,

Actually, that feature might be more properly called Append Completion
and the dropdown menu more properly understood as being the
AutoSuggest list. ;)

You have to look in the registry to see the distinction.
There is a subkey called AutoComplete which has two values:
Append Completion and AutoSuggest.
Append Completion is changed to "no" when Use inline AutoComplete
is unchecked. (in Options, Advanced tab, Browsing section)
AutoSuggest is changed to "no" when
Use AutoComplete for...Web addresses is unchecked.
(in AutoComplete Settings dialog -- Alt-T,O,Content,u,a)

I suppose you are referring to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\AutoCom
plete

And yes, in fact (although AFAIK MSKB has never referenced it as such in any
documentation I have ever been able to locate) Auto Append is a name used.
BTW, How much $ do I owe for all of the FYI info you've offered? :)

(PS - it is still a very convoluted system; one which has those who want to
clear it/ have somethin' to hide/ figure it's nobody's business but their
own running around in circles. AND, furthermore, might make them start doing
things in the TIF's which they shouldn't, which then screws up the Index.dat
and then......... :-D )
