Tricky hardware driver question

M

mb

I'm having trouble installing a driver for a USB IrDA adapter (Sitecom
CN-100v2):
I'll start off by saying that I actually had it successfully installed,
but uninstalled it to update the driver...

I've tried several times to install via the device manager "update driver"
and "reinstall driver" but however I do it, the result is the same, ie.
driver not installed and error message "access is denied".

Yes, I have tried from admin safe mode and my own account. I've updated
motherboard chipset drivers. I've been in the registry and deleted all
reference to the thing (after correctly uninstalling - again).

Any ideas?

You cannot install programs with unsigned drivers in non-interactive mode in
Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP :

Well, thanks for the quick reply, I've had a read and this article only
refers to non-interactive mode (unattended), where the installation would
stop with an unsigned driver.

While it's true that this is indeed an unsigned driver, all I have to do
is click the box to get it to continue... and consequently fail.

the experts can be found here:

however, they basically suggest the following:

If you have installed it incorrectly, Do the following
-Download version 2 of the driver.
-With the adapter plugged in, remove it from device manager.
-From Add/Remove programs, remove the Sitecom driver.
-Physically unplug the IRDa from the USB port.
-Reboot your computer.
-Without the device pluged in, run the driver file (IRExpress20.exe)
-Reboot your computer.
-Insert the adapter into the USB port.
-Allow Windows, to search for and install the drivers.
