Trial version causes existing O/S to fail

Have XP Pro x64 SP1 that will not except any updates and has many problems
with locking up and not shutting down.
Hoped that install with SP2 trial version would correct problems.
Tried to "repair" option. Trial version has locked out original, paid for
XP Pro x64 SP1 with error message that my trial period is over - with the
trial. Being over on immediately after install!
Beware of Microsoft bearing gifts because Microsoft giveth and Microsoft
taketh away!

On what did you base this hope? To me, this does not sound like anything
likely to help.

A better starting point might have been to slipstream your install CD with
SP2, then do a repair; that would have ensured compatible files.

Actually, it's probably more like "beware of hoping that installing another
OS version over a malfunctioning OS will give stable results".

Unfortunately, you've probably painted yourself into a situation where the
only reasonable way to fix this is to either wipe the drive and start over,
or put in a new drive and start over (if there are files you need on the old
drive).

So how is it Microsoft's fault that you are trying to keep alive a
pirated version of their OS by trying to use a trial version of it for
a repair? If you actually had a legit version then you would have
used it for the repair install.

You must be a Dim-o-crap - always thinking negitive! It is not a pirated
copy, you big dummy! Obviously, you're the product of the 30-year,
lower-the-standards Democrat created public school system because in my
original post, I stated "paid for XP Pro x64 SP1". Many people have had
problems with the 64-bit architecture, but you would probably not want to
know that -- don't let the truth get in the way of a perfectly damaging lie.
Vanguard, no.
Now, wake up to the truth, embrace reality -- although it's the only game in
town, it is the best!

Hey, Pat. I've got the original installation disk somewhere. I was hoping
that the trial installation would install the SP2 while doing the "repairs"
bit. Nothing important is saved on the drive. When I can find the desk, I'll
wipe the drive clean and reinstall the OS hoping this time it will not have
the problems of not taking any upgrades, locking up, and not shutting down.
If all else fails, I'll go out and buy an XP 32-bit O/S -- hate to because
the system is an outstanding 64-bit machine.

Claims to have a legit copy of the OS but then tries to "repair" using
a trial version. Uh huh. Also claims to be a technical writer per
his moniker. Yep, sure can see that in his writings here, uh huh.

Ignorance is NOT bliss. Lies do NOT make the truth! "Let him continue his
lies so that all can know his failures!"
I know the truth; I do not have to defend the truth. You also know it,
that's why you have to destroy it. But, it doesn't work.
You know a Democrat in that he tries to destroy with lies, you know a
Republican in that he knows and relishes the truth and tries to build with it
- the difference between the Devil and God, respectively
So, so called, "vanguard", you are not - now, lead by following: "Get thee
behind me (the truth)".
It's your choice. But, you know it... and I know, as all others do too,
everyone knows that you've made that choice, that's why you hide behind lies
fabricated by you and believed only by you... and your ilk.
