I plan to add Linux for testing and will result in Qua-boot (4x) -- what
Linux solution do you suggest and any suggested reading about Linux --
thanks in advance for the comments. The below is posted for people's
interest and also for comments about what they think of PCI Express and
the viability of a RAID configuration. Thanks for looking and I enjoy
hearing your comments. Sorry for being off-topic but I just wanted
users to know that it is possible to have a great system in this day and
age and not to worry about Microsoft and its end of support of 98 Second
Edition on July 11, 2006.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tri-boot (3x) created with help from Boot It NG

98SE -- w/ Fat 32 --- customized version -- meaning a full complete
clean install of the 98 Second Edition on my computer with a customized
registry and customized drivers and everything customized on this -- I
LOVE it -- posting in newsgroup with Thunderbird via Comcast Cable with
98SE -- protected by NAT router and Zone Alarm Professional grin as well
as other safeguards -- on Western Digital 40 gigabyte hard drive

XP Professional -- w/ NTFS -- and Windows Vista Ultimate -- 32 bit
edition -- w/NTFS of course --- XP Professional on one side of partition
--- Windows Vista on other side of partition ---- 80 gigabyte hard drive
-- Western Digital --- XP Pro. with Itunes since I have an Ipod Mini
Windows Vista --- being tested --- needs stronger Internet Explorer
defaults still --- Firewall testing will start soon --- will need to
direct connect to modem and see how the Windows software Vista firewall
handles the attacks that are sure to come -- grin --- Yeah now I am
getting interested

System Build: was
1. Falcon Northwest Gaming Rig -- only metal case w/ plastic front
remains as well as 3.5 inch -- 1.44 mb floppy for backwards
compatibility as well as original Optiquest V773-2 cathode ray tube
monitor -- works like a charm with Aero glass interface after installing

2. Ati Radeon 9800 XT -- 4x/8x AGP card -- using 8x AGP with current
ASUS motherboard, large case with plenty of cooling of course, 430 watt
Antec power supply -- you need 400+ watts of power in this day and age
and even 500+ watts of power is not ridiculous if you are building a
power system

3. 512 megs. of 2700 ddr ram -- upgrading to 3200 ram -- 2 gigs -- will
use 512 chip in other system

4. 2 Hard drives using Ide interface -40 Western Digital gigabyte as
well as 80 Western Digital hardrive for XP Pro. and Windows Vista
Ultimate 32 bit -- RC1 with build 5728- have not got up the courage to
use RAID yet and not sure of support options if any of RAID in 98 Second
Ediition

5. Sound Blaster Audigy 1 -- great older sound card that is now the
minimum I think of the Creative line that is still supported with
drivers --- may have to upgrade this eventually but I hope Creative can
provide another solution that will keep 98SE in the loop -- critical
since I need 98 Second Edition for older legacy programs like Space
which runs in Windows 3.1 and greater and will not work in Windows XP
even with compatibility mode.

6. Printer -- Epson Stylus C64 -- nothing special -- now runs in Windows
Vista after loading current Windows XP driver and installing it on the
Windows Vista Ultimate side

7. 4.1 -- Speaker setup with Cambridge Soundworks -- decent older
speakers and subwoofers that I may eventually replace as funds allow

8. Windows Joystick --- Sidewinder Precision 2 Microsoft Joystick -- had
lots of fun with this in Wing Commander Prophecy -- I do not use it too
much nowadays

9. Microsoft Mice -- Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 -- older
optical mouse that is connected via USB works great + Microsoft wheel
mouse 3.0 w/ PS/2 connection that has older mouse DOS driver for support
in older DOS games

10. Microsoft keyboard --- Natural Keyboard Elite -- weirdly shaped but
I am getting used to it after using it for a while

11. ASUS Deluxe Motherboard and Plextor PX-708A DVD burner and Lite-On
CDR burner and Teac 3.5 inch floppy -- 1.44 mb -- still use this since
floppies are so cheap nowadays and although they hold very little -- if
I lose one it is usually no big deal and I keep backups of my data just
in case

12. Battery Backup -- Critical to protect against brownouts and other
power problems with the Electric Grid + other stuff -- too long a post
to go on anymore

I run linux distros in Virtual PC (on XP Pro of course). Multibooting Vista
and Linux is not for the faint of heart (unless you are expert in
configuring Grub). VPC is free. See http://vpc.visualwin.com/ for a list
of Linux distros that have been tried in VPC.

Triple booting with XP, Vista and Linux.
Both Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and OpenSUSE 1.01 distro's tested.
Grub required NO configuration input whatsover

Thanks and which Linux flavor is the easiest to get started on for a
user that has never used Linux before. Thanks in advance for the replies.
