TreeWalk and DNS with broadband cable

I've posted this problem to the Win200 group, but since this groups is
visited on a more frequent basis, I thought some of you might help as your
opinions are usually excellent.

After having page loading problems the last few days running a Win 2000 OS,
and trying everything to speed things up, when reading DSLreports.com I
found that my provider has been throttling the connection and everyone has
been having problems
that they trace to DNS. The recommendation was to download a program
called TreeWalk.

Doing so, and being somehwat of a novice with ports and such, I'm inching
my way around it. The question is how many instances of rndc.exe should be
running and is it dangerous? I've never seen it before in my task manager.

Secondly, how will running this program affect my firewall?

Lastly, how do I know the program is helping other than by starting and
stopping it!?

since you said that this issue has only been happening for a few days,
and your provider is aware of it, and has identified a problem with their
DNS system, I would assume it would be cleaned up in a few days. there
should be absolutely no reason why a person should NEED a local DNS
server on their LAN.

if it is just their DNS, try using a different one. in the tcp/ip
properties of your network connection, un-check 'Obtain DNS server
automatically' and fill one in.....try 198.59.109.7, or search for
another open DNS.

Um, this group is also about the MS Internet Explorer application. DNS
servers are probably a bit beyond most of the people (except network gurus)
who post here. In other words, you probably will find only a few more
posters in this group who can help you than you did in the other group.

Fortunately for you, Carey Frisch already posted the links that I would have
posted, had I got to your post first. Good luck with your endeavor. I don't
mean that sarcastically. I attempted to run a Windows 9x compatible
precursor to Treewalk; but the complexity of the DNS system is somewhat
daunting, and I only wanted to run a local DNS server to give me the ability
to set up white listed zones to test IP addresses against before subjecting
them to the publicly accessible DNSBLs. It is still on my mind to attempt
it, but probably will be a couple of more years before I actually have it
running.
