transparent gif won't display

I am at my wits' end! I've been trying to get an image file to appear on my
website for days & can't figure out what the problem is. If I place the
image as a jpg, it's fine. The problem is, I need the background to be
transparent. I've converted it to a transparent gif, and it appears
perfectly in the 'normal' page tab FP, but when I go to preview it, I have
that stupid lil' red 'x' in a white box, with the depressed outline of where
the graphic SHOULD be. I have checked & rechecked my html over & over,
thinking something might have been missed...but it's not. I have not resized
the gif, either. It just won't show up!

I tried converting to gif in both Image Composer and another graphics
editing pgm I have, ArcSoft's PhotoStudio.

Your wisdom & help will be GREATLY appreciated!!!!

What did you name the new "transparent" gif file??

I named it "UCSSealAtransparent.gif" and it shows correctly in the html
fiie. Is there a character limit to naming a gif?

Nope, no limit as the file name.
Where on the hard drive is the new gif located??
If it's not in a location "inside" your web folder it won't work.
Make sure it's inside your web, and then remove the link from the page.
Save.
Then reinsert the image on the page.
Do "not" browse outside of the web folder to link to the image.

It's inside My Web folder. I've gone through this process about a dozen
times. I've gone back to the original jpg & converted it again & again. I
finally converted it to a regular gif (not transparent) and the same thing
happens: I can see the image on the "normal" page tab, but when I go to the
preview, it's blank. But the jpg file works!

In between each one I've deleted the image, saved the file, completely
exited FP.... and yet there's no improvement! I've even made sure my
Internet cache is empty!

I'd just scrap it all & find something else to use, but this image is really
important to my site. I just can't figure out what I must be missing?!

Ok. I don't know WHAT the problem was, but I ended up rescanning the entire
image & saving it as a BMP this time. When it converted to the gif, it
showed up beautifully. Thanks for all your help! At least it got me
thinking creatively towards starting over from scratch with the image itself,
and finally getting the image file to work.

Either that, or the computer gremlins turned in for the night.

which begs the question: how did you convert the jpg to a gif in the first
place?
