transferring to new hard drive

Chris

I got a new hard drive for a computer and it came with the MaxBlast
software. Since the computer is a slimline, I had to move to the new
drive. I used the MaxBlast software to do the copy. It seemed to work
ok, but after a couple of days I noticed some weird things. Icons
started disappearing (replace by the generic windows icon), and a
program that i tried to uninstalled errored out. I tried to copy from
the old drive a second time, but it still did the same things.

I next tried the copy using partition magic, but when i try to boot off
the new drive, it only gets to the graphical screen with a mouse cursor
and no further. I can move the mouse around, but that's it.

So how can I copy this install to a new drive? I really don't want to
do a reinstall -- what a pain!!!

Any ideas on how I can do this? Thanks.

some things you might want to consider are the size of the two drives
the same? Is the new drive the same siz as the old one? This might be
an issue even if the new drive is the bigger of the two.

Also it might be an xp security feature. I'm not sure about this but
xp does some wired things in terms of what hardware serial numbers and
things it uses to verify itself to itself.

if you like, I think I had a conversation with Timothy Daniels in
google groups a while back and he seems to have much insight on
transferring systems from HDD this way. I can email you the
conversation. It may provide food for thought.

there is a program called "Ghost" by symantec this will make a clone image
of your drive and let you copy it to your new drive
