The point of my question was to avoid doing exactly that, reinstalling any
of the software. I will not be doing that because I can't do that.

You have eliminated all working solutions then.

Anna is looking for confirmation. It is possible that my experience
is purely coincidental, however, I am currently trapped on an AB9 Pro
by ABIT (P965 motherboard) and can't continue the installation. I
have tried many combinations of optical drives and settings and
cables, not considering the possibility that the JMicron chip might be
in the middle causing the issue. The baffling part about it is that
bootable CD's placed in the optical drive can be "booted" until it
comes time for the program loading the software to refer to the
optical drive as a drive letter. Then the boot process fails.

Given the similarities with what Bruce described and my numerous
attempts to overcome this challenge, I am currently a believer in his
proposition. I have seen other forums where it is emphasized that
success came with a SATA optical drive, but I haven't found anyone who
stated they had success with a PATA optical drive.

I certainly am disappointed in the abandonment of a huge standard in
the reliable IDE Optical drive and to that end couldn't even believe
it possible, thus spending many hours trying to work through it. Of
course, I hope someone has a work around utilizing the IDE Optical
drives (CD ROM or DVD-ROM or DVD-RW) and will clarify these steps here
on this forum. I have also attempted to get a response from Abit
about this but have yet to hear back from them.

Have you done this?

Q: Why do I got the Stop 0x0000007B or "0x4,0,0,0" Error when I am
installing Windows XP/2000?

A: If you are using any devices on IDE1, please install the JMicron
RAID driver.

During the Windows installation, press F6 when prompted to install
JMicron RAID driver (JMicron driver floppy disk).
