Transferring ipod contents to computer with new install of itunes

My desktop had a major crash and I lost itunes among other software.
I would like to reinstall itoons and then download the contents of my
ipod into the itunes folders. I am leery of proceed in for fear of
the software wiping out the contents of the ipod. How do I proceed to
install itunes and hooking up my ipod 20 GB in such a way that I can
safely download the music files now resident on the iPod? Any help
would be greatly appreciated

I agree. You are right to be concerned about the iPod
getting erased, when iTunes is installed.

The bottom of this page has some comments, but I'd still
want to double check the advice here.

More info here.

If the previous iTunes install had a preferences folder or
some place it stored the database info it uses, that would
be another valuable resource. Maybe if you salvaged that,
there would be less risk. (I suppose that only still
exists, if you haven't reformatted the drive already.)

Since I have heard of iPods getting wiped, by attempted
sync in situations like you're in, I would be careful.
And find an *exact* recipe, by someone who has done it.

Apple has a discussion forum, and there might be examples
of your situation in there.

Good luck,

In most cases, connecting an IPOD without Itunes software (via USB) which
show the ipod content as a drive which you can back up. However, I would
NOT be concerned all that much about the IPOD files getting wiped out.
Install Itunes, then reboot, then connect the ipod. DO NOT synch the IPOD
since that will clear out the files. Instead, create new folders for it.
