Transferring Contacts from XP through Vista and then to Vista agai

Make any sense? 1st time in discussion group. Trust this is appropriate.

When I purchased my new Toshiba it came with the whizbang new Vista Home
Basic OS. I'm somewhat limited in my IT 'transfer' knowledge and attempted
to transfer all my files over. I was reasonably successful.....until I hit
my Outlook Express email files. I had a local roving IT specialist come in
and clean things up but he determined that Vista/Mail didn't read OE so a
direct transfer wasn't possible (so he told me). To allow me to move with my
laptop and anticipating being able to work on it in the future, I actually
established another user on Vista and have transferred all the info I want to
ultimately transfer to my main user to the secondary user.....clear as muddy
water?

When I open Vista, I have two users available but only use the one. I want
to get rid of the other but need to transfer the OE files. I've today tried
the following: I exported the Contact files (save as '.pst') to a zipped
folder and attached it as an email to myself. I sent the email, cleared out
of the secondary user and received said email, including attachment, in Mail
on the primary user site. When I try to open and/or import these .pst files,
I'm told this is a dangerous action. Can I actually enable this 'open file'
and import the files as it's actually from the same computer and this
'attention: Danger' warning seems to be 'virus-carrying email' driven?

Thanks for taking the time to read through the above and look forward to any
assistance that's available.

To start with, .PST files belong to Microsoft Office Outlook, they do NOT
belong to Outlook Express. Which program were you using, Outlook or Outlook
Express? The two are entirely different programs, as are the methods used
to transfer data from either of them to Windows Mail.

My apologies. You're right, Hal, the Contacts I'm trying to transfer between
two users on the same computer do indeed originate from Microsoft Office
Outlook.

Many thanks for your reply and I look forward to the next one.

For Outlook, just make a copy (NOT an export) of the .PST file containing
the contacts you want; do this with Outlook closed. Put the copy in a
folder you can access from the desired user login. Log in as the "main"
user, open Outlook, go to 'File|Open |Outlook Data File', navigate to the
copy and open it. You can now either continue to use this Personal Folders
file as is, or drag the Contacts from it and drop them into the .PST file
created for the "Main User".
