I bought Win XP upgrade and installed in my Dad's
computer. After using a few weeks he wanted it removed
and had Win 98 reinstalled. It is now not being used on
any computer. I want it on my IBM laptop. Will
Microsoft request me to buy another licence even though
it is not any computer presently?

No, but you'll have to manually activate via a phone call
and tell them what you did.

And, since it is a Upgrade Version you will need a qualifying product (Win
98, ME) to upgrade from. Your Dad's 98 is in use on his machine, so it won't
qualify for your computer. However you probably have a qualifying version on
your laptop, so that won't be a problem. If you are considering a clean
install of XP, you can do it with the upgrade disk. Boot from the XP CD and
insert the qualifying disk when asked.

Actually, any Windows install CD since Win95 is qualifying media, and
the XP install will see it and install.

"Trustworthy Computing" is only another example of an Oxymoron!
"Produkt-Aktivierung macht frei!"

No - a retail upgrade may be transferred - provided it has been removed
from the original machine, just go ahead and install on the new one.
But with laptops it is as well to check with the makers that there are
no special considerations around the hardware. When it comes to
activation, if it is more than 120 days since you last did it, you will
find it will go through on the net just like first time. If not, you
will have to phone a toll-free number that will be given, to explain and
swap one long number for another to check back as you type it in
