Transfering protected data from one instance of WindowsXp to another...

I am attempting to recover data from a data drive used by a
pre-lightning-strike instance of WindowsXP - the operating
system
being installed to a separate hard disk. The lightning strike
managed
to defect the mainboard but there is no damage to any other
hardware.

The data was protected specific to the WindowsXP user or
account.
However, now that Windows has been reinstalled with the
original
account name and password at the replacement of the
mainboard, it
cannot write to and in many cases even read the files on the
data
drive even though there is nothing wrong with the drive or
file
system itself.

The files are either read-only or "access denied". Does
anyone have a
way recovering these files?

Thanks in Advance...

You need to disable Simple File Sharing and take ownership of
the files. Take a look at these articles for more info:

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck
