Transfering data from imac

My friend has an iMac, Apple computer with operating
system OS 9.2. He has entered some data onto APPLEWORKS
and has e-mailed it to me. It comes in the form of
a ".dat" file. I can't figure out how to resave this or
in some way convert it into my Excel spreadsheet so that
I can then use it in a Mail Merge program in Word.

Thanks in advance for your help.

AFAIK, the .dat file won't be able to be read by XL directly.

However, depending on the version of AppleWorks, your friend should be
able to save his file in XL format, or, at the very least, as a text
file or SYLK file, which can be read directly by both Win and MacXL.

You can check out Conversions Plus by DataViz to convert, but it's
fairly pricey:

Thanks for your response. I have a PC, not a mac. What
exactly should my friend do to save it, just do "save as"
and then select file type as excel or text? If he e-
mails it to me, will I be able to read it with Excel
program on my PC, even though I don't have a mac?

Thanks

Dave

Yes, File/Save As will work. If saved in Excel format or as Text, you'll
be able to read it in WinXL (WinXL97/00/02/03 and MacXL98/01/v.X/04
share identical file formats).
