Transfering complete HDD

Mike

Hi !!
At the moment I have a 80g hard drive partitioned into 2 40/40 ( C + G )
C having the operating system on it
D only data
I have bought a 160g hard drive which is also partitioned into 2 lets say
80/80 ( H + I )
I would like to have the 160g as the primary and the 80g as the secondary
drive
What is the best way to transfer the XP Pro operating system from lets say C
to H
Without having to reinstall XP
Would a command like Xcopy work?
Please steer me in the right direction

ThanX

A lot of new HD come with programs that "transfer" old to new.I would check
the HD manufacturers website to see what they have.
I personally use Acronis True Image...but there are other programs out there
that "Ghost" one HD to another.

No, XCopy will not work. You need a special cloning program for this.
I like Acronis True Image, but their are other choices. And your drive
probably came with one.

I have done this more then once and had great luck:
you need one free unused hd or external device with free space (no
partitions created on the free space at least the size of your current hd,
so your new hd should be fine. go to softpedia.com and download the Linux
rescue cd, it is free.
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/System/Recovery/System-Rescue-CD-188.shtml
burn the iso
make sure the source and target drives are connected. boot to the rescue
cd, select all defaults when the boot process is done you will see a
message regarding mounting ntfs.
types startx
x shell starts, right click and select Gparted after few seconds, you will
see a window listing your first drive, and the top right drop back allows
you to choose other disks.
highlight/right click the partition you want to copy and select copy
use the drop list box to show the new drive
right click and paste
click apply. Depending on the size it can take 30 minutes to 4 hours,
does no effect your machine in any way and can always be reversed.
Let me know if you have any issues.
