Two Questions:
1)If I transfer files and settings from one computer to
another (both with Windows XP) can I retain the files and
settings on the original computer.
2)By direct cable connection can I copy files from the
host computer to the guest computer?

Hi, Richard. Question 1: The reason for doing the "files and settings"
transfer is because you want the new computer to be like the old one.
Doing the transfer makes the new user account like the old user
account, but doesn't affect the old user account at all. It doesn't
somehow "erase" the old one, if that is what you were concerned about.

Question 2: Yes. Make sure you read about it in XP's Help & Support and
use the correct type of cable. Frankly, if all you want to do is
transfer files, I think it's quicker and easier to either establish a
network or pull the hard drive from the old machine and slave it
(temporarily or permanently, as you wish) in the new machine. But
that's just me.

Let us know if you need more help.

Cheers,

Malke
