Transfer wizard won't transfer

Had to reinstall windows from scratch. Had my system up long enough to do a
settings and transfer wizard. Now my PC is back up and I attempted to
transfer my settings back and the wizard says the new version of XP is not
the same as the previous and I need to retransfer my settings with the
current version.

The prior version is no longer. How can I restore my settings?

Make sure your current installation is at the same service pack
level as your old installation. If you had Service Pack 2
installed previously, you'll have to reinstall it before trying
to restore your files and settings. Go to Windows Update and
download all the critical updates.

Also, if you applied this update to your old installation, you
may need it now:

Update for Windows XP (KB896344)

Good luck

I had that happen and fixed it by following directions on the
Wizard error screen which said to create a 3.5" floppy with the
newer version on the other PC. Worked like a charm. Could that
be what you're referring to?

The problem is there is no other PC. I had to rebuild XP Pro from scratch.

My problem come from the fact that my prior installation of XP was current
through sp2 and all additional updates. My new build is the same. Therein
lies the dilema. Any suggestions?

Please read respone to post below. Both PC's were current with SP2 and all
current updates. Any suggestions? I used the same media for the rebuild.

While you may think that your current installation has the same
updates installed as your old installation, Windows thinks
otherwise. Since both systems had SP2 installed, it has to be a
post SP2 update that's causing your problem.

I provided a link to one update that's been known to cause the
problem you're having. Another update that might be causing
your problem would be this one:

Vulnerability in Windows Explorer Could Allow Remote Code
Execution (908531)
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

If you've installed this update on your current setup, you
might want to uninstall it and see if you can run the transfer
wizard. It's also possible that one of the other updates that
was released last week is the source of your problem. Here's a
link to an article that outlines all of last weeks updates:

Microsoft Security Bulletin Summary for April, 2006
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms06-apr.mspx

Click on the + signs in the Summary section to view more info
on the individual updates.

If you're desperate to retrieve your old files and nothing
you've tried works, you might want
to try the procedure outlined in this article:

Dealing with corrupt Files and Settings Transfer Wizard
(F.A.S.T) image
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/fast.htm

Since I've never had to resort to using fastconv.exe, I can't
vouch for its effectiveness. I'm simply passing the suggestion
along as a tool of last resort.

Good luck

Understood. I wasn't clear about my first answer. In my case,
I'd saved the Wizard stuff on one SP and try to transfer to
another SP when it balked, although in my case I really was
trying to save to another PC. The floppy thing fixed my problem,
so it was just a suggestion.

The FSTW /thinks/ you're going from one PC to another even if
you're not. I use it as a general backup tool on my SP2 box and
older SP1 machine, although I have to create a dated folder or
it will overwrite the previous save, again because it only
thinks in terms of a single use.

I'll gracefully bow out, as it sounds like my problem isn't the
same as yours.
