transfer wizard using serial cable

i am trying to transfer settings and files from my old
computer toshiba laptop sattellite pro running windows 98
to my new computer sony vaio running windows xp. i run
the transfer wizard using the serial cable method to
connect the two computers. i connected the two and get
to the point where i click Autodetect on both wizards to
select the serial port setting. It then says the wizard
is trying to connect the two "this may take a minute" it
then just runs and runs indefinitely -- never connects,
never gives any error msg saying it can't connect, but
never shows a successful connection. any advice.

Are you using a standard serial cable? If so it won't work. You need a
crossover cable, available at your local computer store.
