Hi,

I'm putting together a new PC, possibly including a new hard drive (haven't
decided yet), and was wondering if there is any way to transfer Windows 2000
Pro over to the new PC. The C: (systems) partitition on my current setup is
FAT32.

I know how to transfer Win2K to a new drive on the same PC (using an image,
which worked fine), but not sure about whether or not I can do something
similar when moving to a new PC (different motherboard, etc.).

Is the only way to do this a new Win2K installation and then re-installing
all my applications, etc.?

Thanks,
Jim

Windows 2000 is a very hardware-oriented operating system.
The general rule is do a clean install unless the new system
is a very close twin of the original system. There are just
too many variables --- CPU, chipset, video, memory, etc.,
involved. This is because Windows 2000 is an operating system
in itself...not a shell. And, of course, with a clean install,
the applications also have to be installed independently.

Hi,

Thanks! Am I correct that the 2nd procedure on that page is the one that I
should be following? The 1st one looks like a clean install...

Jim

The introduction to the first method says: "To replace a working motherboard
with an updated motherboard and to then reconfigure Windows to work with the
new motherboard, follow these steps:".

I would have thought that this fits exactly your scenario, as per your first
post . . .
