Transfer settings & files from windows.old to Vista

I was hoping to set up a dual boot with Vista but was not allowed to create a
new partition to house it, so I installed it on my main drive. I get an
error if I try to boot into XP. I can't get the WET to transfer my
settings/files from windows.old to Vista. What can I safely drag/drop into
Vista, or should I just uninstall Vista, do the WET for XP, and then
reinstall Vista?

You did a clean install to the same partition as XP hence your old windows
directory got renamed to windows.old. WET cannot do an offline migration of
sytem/app settings from your windows.old directory. Also, you mos tlikely
don't have any personal data stored in your windows.old directory as WET's
primary role is to migrate User data and not OS files.

If you want to end up with a clean system, I would suggest you copy (backup)
the files you need to another drive/partition, clean the primary partition
and install Vista there. My 2 cents.

Hello,
Thanks for posting. From your post, I understand that you performed a clean
installation of Windows Vista over your Windows XP installation and have
files in windows.old that you want to retrieve. See if this article that
walks through how to restore your personal files after you perform a custom
installation of Windows Vista answers your question:

Please let me know if I can provide further assistance on this problem.
Sincerely,
Byron
