transfer of old Excel 97 files

is it possible to transfer files from an old PC to a new
laptop which has only Microsoft Works Spreadsheet
capabilities. Or do i need to buy & install the new excel?

Thanks if anyone can help me.
 
Unfortunately you will need Excel. MS Works cannot read Excel files.

You'll be able to open some Excel files, but Works has limited features,
so most of your files won't work as they did in Excel.

For example, Works only has one sheet per file, but Excel workbooks can
have many sheets.
