(Used to work normally under Windows 2000 Pro)

1) Upon connecting device to an USB port:
"USB Device Not Recognized. One of the USB devices attached to this computer
has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in
solving this problem click this message.
2) This message reads as follows:
"The location of this device is shown in bold type:
[ - ] USB Root Hub (8 ports)
unused port
unused port
unused port
unused port
unused port
unused port
unused port
UNKNOWN DEVICE

Recommendation: try reconnecting the device. If Windows still does not
recognize it, replace the device."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
My question is: can this device be considered as defective?
All other devices: digital camera, scanner etc. work normally when connected
to the same USB ports, which do not recognize the Card Reader.

Thanks for any help.

You need to contact the manufacturer and ask if they support Windows XP, if
so download the drivers from them and install them. If not, you can't use
it with XP.

From the Card Reader installation manual:
Windows 98/98SE & Windows 2000:

1. Run the "Win98_2k\Setup.exe" program from Driver CD.
2. Install Shield Wizzard wil guide you through the installation process.
--------------------------------------------
Windows Me & Windows XP:
No driver needed. The OS will detect and install all the associated files
required for its use automatically.
-------------------------------------------

As you see, unless it's a false advertisement, Windows XP should recognize
the reader "automatically".

Thanks for taking interest in this issue.

again, if you can't get it to work the best thing to do is contact the
company. their's not much we can suggest you do. If the drivers are in
Windows XP the device should of found them.

Exactly my sentiment. I'm working on it. So far received an inclonclusive
email from tech support:
-------------------------------begin--------------------------------How many
other sub devices?

Have you tried using it on other systems?

What did you upgrade from?
