Tranferring Hard Drives to New Motherboard

I recently had a system crash (motherboard failure) on my desktop PC,
and would like to simply transfer all components (videocard, 2 hard
drives, DVD drives, etc) to a new motherboard (which will surely be a
different one from the 5 year old one that failed).

I know that there's a way to do a "Repair" Install to accomplish this,
but my situation is a bit more complicated. My original install CD for
the desktop system is XP Pro SP1. I recently installed SP2, so the
original CD doesn't match what's on the hard drives.

Just before my desktop system crashed, I was researching this and
someone here pointed me to the Simplyguides.net website for
instructions, which I printed. However, the instructions talk about an
applet called "Autostreamer" which allows one to create an SP2 install
CD. Although this would address my situation, I didn't create that CD
in time before my system crashed.

The laptop that I just purchased (and am using for this post) has XP2
Media Center installed, so I'm not sure if I can create an SP2 install
CD on it to use on my desktop system after I replace the motherboard.

Can someone guide me thru the procedure to have a new motherboard
"accept" my 2 hard drives without having me to wipe them clean and lose
all of my data and apps. I REALLY want to avoid having to re-install
everything.

Thanks!

Hi,

You can't use the laptop's disk to restore the desktop system. You will need
to slipstream SP2 into the XP disk and create a new install disk to do the
repair install without losing everything. If your XP-SP1 disk is proprietary
OEM, you may not be able to install with a different motherboard.

To create a slipstreamed disk, see:

Well for a board change the hd (C:) will need to be formatted then a clean
install of xp,thier's simply no way a "repair" is even going to try to
start....
The only transfer one might/could do is run the FTW from the xp cd on the
old system, then reopen in new XP,this could save settings and youre files..

What do you mean by FTW?

Thanks!

FTW = File Transfer Wizard (actually, it's the Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard or FASTWIZ).

advice can be destructive. Follow the information that MVP Rick Rogers
gave you.

YOU DO NOT have to format the HD when installing a new MB.

You said you have a new laptop with Win Media Edition. As long as it has a
CD Burner you can use it to create a Slipstream copy of XPsp2.
You need your original XP CD and the Full Network version of SP2, either on
CD or downloaded from Microsoft, together with Autostreamer.
SP2 here:-

Autostreamer here with Help files etc:-
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=223562

Install Autostreamer and follow instructions.

On you PC with replaced MB, ensure Bios is set to boot from CD and insert
new Slipstreamed XPsp2 CD. Carry out a repair installation and once you are
up and running, visit Windows Update as you will have to download and
reinstall all the updates since SP2's release.
As an alternative you could download the latest copy of Autopatcher which
will update XPsp2.

I have replaced 3 MB in PC's running XP using this method.Successful each
time, without having to reformat and reinstall XP.

Can verify this works with a generic OEM XP w/SP1 CD. Resulting autostream
w/SP2 CD was installation CD for last XP install on this PC.

It doesn't hurt to try a dirty or repair install of XP. I have no choice
but to skip that step and go straight to wiping all old partitions, create a
new partition, format, and clean install XP. Its more or less foolproof.

Thank you VERY MUCH for that clear clarification on the procedure. It
sounds like this is very do-able.

Thanks!

No Problem. Better luck with the next MB.

Required:
XP CD
Latest SP
AutoStreamer
and a burner
This can be done on any WindowsNT box. As a matter of fact I slipstreamed
my XP SP2 disk on a win2k box.

Yikes! I just realized that my original XP CD is a WinXP Pro UPGRADE
CD! Do you know if this is usable in this procedure? (I'm ready to go
otherwise....) If not, are there any additional steps that would make
this work?

Thanks!
