By getting familiar with the programmes you have installed on your pc and
whether you want them to connect to net or not.If an unfamiliar
application asks to connect , then check out its origin.Also firewall

Anything that you don't specifically want. Allow your browser, your email
client, your news reader. Do NOT allow: Windows kernel, Windows Explorer,
RPCSS, DCOM, or any services running under Windows 2000 or XP unless they
are vital to maintaining Internet connectivity.
If you block something and immediately some feature becomes "broken," it's
very easy to go into the Applications dialog and allow it again.
