tracking versions

I have a file (Office 2003 Word) that has a Revision Number of 26 in the
summary tab under properties. When using the FIle | Versions command,
nothing is shown because the check box was not checked. First, is there a
way to recover this information (i.e what dates I worked on the file) and can
I make Word automatically save a version on close the default for all files?
If it makes a difference, I think the file was originally created in Office
2000.

The version number you see in the File Properties have to do with the number
of times the document has been saved. There are no "versions" or other
information to extract from the file.

The File/Versions command isn't related to the File Properties. While you
can enable the File/Versions feature it isn't recommended. This is known to
cause document bloat and corruption. Put it this way, it works so well it
was removed in Word 2007. ;-)
