tracking messages not sent

I'm using 2003.
I get a message that outlook is trying to send 3 messages, but for some
reason they cannot be sent (something like: cannot connect to the smtp
server...).
But the problem is that no message appears in the outbox folder.
I suspect that these messages are delivery receipt.
How do I delete those delivery receipt messages?
