Track changes

(1) Tracked changes in my Word document show up with insertions in one color,
deletions in another color. Instead of color-coding based on
insertions/deletion, I want to to track changes with different colors for
different authors. How do I get rid of color coding based on what is
inserted and deleted?
(2) How do I track changes to show changes by author #1 in one color,
changes by author #2 in another color. I have been through the Track Changes
button, then the "Show" button options and this does not seem to help.

What you want is the default behavior of Track Changes. Find the Track
Changes options (if we knew which version of Word, we could tell you
where) and set each of the dropdowns to its first item.

I have MS Word Office 2003 and Windows Vista Home Premium. However, I have
gone to Tools/Options/Track Changes, and have tried various settings in the
droop down menu unsuccessfully, including the box that allows you to select
"By Author". I also tried setting these boxes to the first item (which made
the track changes program operate differently but not how I wanted):
Insertions set to "none", deletions set to "none", Formatting "none" and
comments color "by author." These changes did not enable the program in the
way I want. Are there default settings that I need to get rid of? If so,
where are they?

I can't look at 2003 to see what they've changed, but "By Author" will
give you a different (and somewhat unpredictable) color for each
author's insertions and deletions -- unless at some point that
information was removed by someone who saved it after the operation to
remove identification of different authors (which can be done for
privacy).

You don't want "none" because then the changes won't show; you want
them both set to the same value, but not to a specific color (because
that would overrule the "By Author," I suspect.

By "first item," Peter meant the first color selection, which is "By
author." The default setting for the formatting itself is Underline for
insertions and Strikethrough for deletions (you can choose something
different if you prefer), and this formatting will use a different color for
each "reviewer." If you choose to display balloons, you'll see insertions
inline and deletions in balloons in Final Showing Markup view. In Original
Showing Markup view, you'll see deletions struck through and insertions in
balloons.
