trace precedent button grayed

On some of my worksheets the trace precedent buttons are gray and can't be
used.
How to I restore the functionality of these buttons? On my prior version of
Excel, 2003, it said to use an auditing command. I don't know what was meant
by an auditing command.

hI,

If the worksheet is protected then that function isn't available, try
unprotecting the sheet.
