Formula auditing

I am trying to audit a model I received via email but the file does not
appear to allow auditing (i.e., the 'trace precedents', 'trace dependents',
etc. buttons are not responsive). The author of the file says that he did
not change any settings. Does anybody know how to switch this functionality
back on?

Did you try quitting Excel and re-opening it?

Or failing that, re-booting your computer?

Yes, I have tried that - to no avail. Incidentally, the author of the file
says that he can't audit the file on his computer either.
