trace dependents

When I do a trace dependent on a formula, sometimes I get
solid lines to the contributing cells, and sometimes it's
a dotted line. I have figured out that a dotted line means
the contributing cell is not on the current worksheet.
What I haven't been able to figure out is why sometimes I
can click on the dotted arrow to be brought to the
contributing cell, and sometimes nothing happens when I do
this. Can any tell me the 'rules' to this ? Like, the
contributing cell is on a password protected file or
something ? Using Excel 2002. Also - would anyone know if
anything relating to 'trace dependents' changed between
Excel 2000 and Excel 2002 ? I have a client stating that
the dotted lines would always bring him to the
contributing cells, but since being upgraded to 2002 it is
no longer working......

Lynn,

The dotted line will (as far as I know) always bring you to the contributing
cells, but the area in which you can click is small.
You probably just "missed" the line with the clicking in those occasions you
weren't brought to those cells.

I don't know about XL2002, but (again) as far as I know it's nearly the same
as XP which I'm using and which still has the the same operationmode as far
as this is concerned as it was in XL 97
