Totally Baffled

Hey Guys,
Got one for you that has me pulling my hair out. I removed my 2nd hard drive
(file storage only, no operating system), installed an SATA drive to format
it. Got it formatted, removed "C", loaded XP on the SATA, Re-attached
original "C" & 2nd hard drives, rebooted to transfer additional files from
the "C" drive so that I can format "C" drive and use it as storage
also..System will not boot on original hard drive when 2nd hard drive is
connected. Blue screens and re-starts. Removed original "C" drive, system
will boot from SATA, but 2nd hard drive is not showing up in windows
explorer. Drive will show up in Disk Management, but only gives me the option
of delete or format on right click. WHat happened to the drive? I do not want
to reformat this drive, I want to be able to pull the remaining pictures I
have on there and then I am willing to re-format if need be.
The system will blue screen on start up even if I remove the SATA drive and
put everything back as it was before I added the SATA drive.

Please help, I don't have much hair left!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boards need to be configured for SATA & IDE hds in the BIOS,also, once SATA
is set to run with IDE,if an IDE is installed after,by default most boards
reset to
boot to the IDE,even if you has SATA set as 1st boot device. If all is/was set
properly, try removing the battery at power off, reset CMOS on the board.

Billy:
I'm not exactly certain as to your present situation or precisely what you
have done, however, I'll assume the following...

1. You now have a SATA HDD that's your boot drive. That drive functions
without any problems when it's the sole HDD connected in your system, i.e.,
it boots without incident and functions without any problems thereafter.
That's right, isn't it?

2. Now your description is obscure as to whether you have one or two other
secondary HDDs. And whether the one or two are PATA or SATA HDDs. I'll
assume you have only one other secondary HDD and that HDD is a PATA HDD.

3. We'll further assume that all your HDDs are non-defective together with
their data cables and that you've correctly connected & configured your
HDDs, i.e., your SATA boot drive is connected to the motherboard's SATA 0
(or 1) connector and that your secondary HDD is properly connected to the
appropriate IDE channel. And that all HDDs are correctly jumpered. And
you're certain the secondary HDD is non-defective, right?

4. Ensure that your BIOS indicates that the SATA HDD is first in boot
priority order.

5. If all looks well but there's still a problem with the non-recognition of
your secondary HDD, disconnect that drive and boot only with the SATA HDD
connected. Shut down the machine and reconnect the secondary HDD. Again,
make sure it's connected & jumpered correctly. Boot.

6. Try Disk Management again if there's still a problem.

7. If still no go, try connecting the secondary PATA HDD on another IDE
channel.

The system is booting correctly to the SATA drive and not to the IDE drive.
The drive that is giving me problems is the IDE drive that I was using for
storage. The system boots fine with the SATA drive, it just won't assign the
storage drive a drive letter or recongize it in windows explorer.

Thanks for your reply, please see my comments below. I hope this time I was a
little clearer with my problem

Please see my responses below.

Thanks, Billy

The SATA is now the boot drive and it boots fine with the
IDE drives. It will not read the IDE drive that I used for storage purposes.
The IDE boot drive reads fine, and I can access it to transfer my files.

2. Now your description is obscure as to whether you have one or two other
secondary HDDs. And whether the one or two are PATA or SATA HDDs. I'll
assume you have only one other secondary HDD and that HDD is a PATA HDD.

I have two IDE secondary devices. One was the original
boot drive, that I will remove files from (docs..etc) before formatting drive
to use as storage. The second IDE drive was used as a storage drive. This is
the drive that I am having problems with. It will not show up in explorer
when connected with the SATA drive, but it will show up in Disk management.
When I connect both IDE drives, ( as my previous configuration) and
disconnect SATA, try to boot on the IDE drive, I get a blue screen and
automatic restart. Bios was set to disable SATA and boot from correct drive.

3. We'll further assume that all your HDDs are non-defective together with

That is correct!
4. Ensure that your BIOS indicates that the SATA HDD is first in boot
priority order.

The SATA boots first!
5. If all looks well but there's still a problem with the non-recognition of
your secondary HDD, disconnect that drive and boot only with the SATA HDD
connected. Shut down the machine and reconnect the secondary HDD. Again,
make sure it's connected & jumpered correctly. Boot.

Will try that!
6. Try Disk Management again if there's still a problem.

Only option in disk management is Format or
Delete

7. If still no go, try connecting the secondary PATA HDD on another IDE
channel.

Tried that, didn't work.

Yes, they show up everywhere except in explorer. I managed to find a recovery
program and am in the process in recovering all the files on the screwed up
disk.

Thank you everybody for your responses,
