Totalling up a field from subform to main form

Hi,

I want to provide a total of a particular field into the main form for use
in producing reports and charts etc. I would have thought that something like

=SUM(<Record location>)

would work. When I construct the expression for the total it doesn't
complain but when the form is being run it doesn't show a title just "#Error".

Can anyone please help me?
