Total Uninstall 2.35(684KB) - temporary not available (try again later)

Total Uninstall
(Freeware) (last freeware version)
Windows OS: Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP
Languages: English, Brazilian-Portuguese, Catalan, ChineseBig5, Czech,
Dutch, French, Galician, German, Greek, Italian, Korean, Polish,
Romanian, Russian, Spanish
Description: Total Uninstall can help you to monitor any changes that
were made to your system during installation of a new software product
and allow you to perform a complete uninstall without having to rely on
the supplied uninstall program (which may leave files or changes
behind). To use it, you simply launch the installation program from the
Total Uninstall interface and select the system areas to be monitored.
The program will then create a snapshot of your system before it
installs the new software and an additional snapshot after install
completes. It then compares the two snapshots and displays all changes
in a graphical tree view, marking all values and/or files that have been
added or changed as well as some before/after details. Total Uninstall
will save these changes and if you decide to uninstall the application,
it will reverse all changes to the previous state.

From looking at her site:
http://www.martau.com/tu2_download.php
it's very obvious that Gabi (Gavrila Martau)
doesn't want us to use her old freeware.

Don't you all think it would be only fair to respect
her wish?

And Microsoft doesn't want you to use Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows
NT, or Windows 2000 any more either!
Don't you all think it would be only fair to respect her wish?
No! But I'm sure a better program will come along that is Freeware and
folks will stop using her old freeware version and start using the new
one.
Further discussion about the $hareware version should take place in:

I don't read it that way. "temporary not available (try again later)"

My hunch is that the Freeware download is going to be hosted on another
site: CNet, WinSite etc. etc. There are a number of last freeware apps
that are distributed that way now by their authors.

IOW - I think temporary *means* temporary. Otherwise why not just remove
the web page?

We were recently given permission to distribute TUN on the PL2005 CD -
ISTM that's another indication that the author does *not* wish to cut
off distribution of the LFW version.

Hello, people!

This issue makes me, a lurker, come into the open. Excuse me if it has
been discussed before:

Supposing the author *did* wish to cut off distribution, would the
current wish produce a moral obligation stronger than the wish declared
in the licence of the LFW version?

The author.

The only other mention of copyright that I could find is in the exe
properties:
Copyright: Freeware

My anwser is no, but I'm not very sure. As I see it, redistribution is
not forbidden, and no express permission is required. Are there any
reasons one should not go by the written license?

Thanks for any replies

I can think of a few but I doubt the question will arise. . .

What the author may *wish* is often irrelevant. One of this year's
Pricelessware authors commented on that (in an email) - saying that he
*couldn't* stop distribution of the Freeware version when he releases a
new shareware version - as the Freeware version was available all over
the net. (I suspect that's true of TUN too. Some links have already been
posted.)

IOW - authors know that you can't put the genie back in the bottle. . .

I can only recall one instance where an author made a posted request
asking people in ACF not to distribute an earlier Freeware version of a
program that had become shareware. The responders in the thread said
they would honor the author's request. I don't recall the details. IIRC
the circumstances were a bit unusual. . .

If YOU say so.

I checked out her website too, and I agree with Susan. There is
no indication there that she wants to stop the freeware version.

And we have a strong and recent indication that she allows distribution
of the freeware version.

Some authors require hosting sites to link to their download page rather
than host the files themselves, so when and if the author decides to go
$hareware their are no copies of the freeware version floating around
the net. At least not until someone pulls the last freeware version out
of their archives, and not until someone graciously hosts the file.

Apologies for the top post

No apologies needed. The whole debate over top vs. bottom posting is
stupid since each has its advantages. The main disadvantage of bottom
posting is obvious.

If she wanted you to give her $10,000, would you respect her wish?

Looks like you don't understand a lot about moral values.
But that's no wonder - after all you are suffering from pseudo-Christian
Jesuland mumbo-jumbo.

Hi,

Due to the unexpected amount of traffic for the server I removed temporary
the archive of the freeware version.
Depending of the traffic tendency I will buy additional bandwidth to host
the freeware version.
The freeware version makes about a half of the site total traffic.

Thank you,
Gavrila Martau.
