Starting yesterday my PC will, after various lengths of
time, suddenly switch off as if the power supply has been
cut off.It will not restart unless I disconnect the power
lead at the back and then put it back in again.Does the
PSU have a thermal cut-out or the motherboard or both?
SiSoft Sandra does not report the system as running too
hot.

It could be overheating or it could be impending failure. That's a pretty
typical symptom of a motherboard with the defective capacitors that have
been going around.

It can also be symptoms of a power supply that is greatly underpowered for
the system it is in.
