Help -- Baffled By Installation Error

Roy

Hi,

I have a custom built PC that has been running Win2k Pro for the past
2 years with no problems. Decided to upgrade to XP, but am having
issues. First, the config:

Abit KT7A Motherboard, flashed to latest BIOS
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1100 mhz
512 MB RAM; Maxtor 13 GB Hard Drive
Liteon CDRW; Artec CDROM
US Robotics Modem; D-Link NIC
Sound Blaster Live OEM Sound Card
ATI Mach 64 PCI Video Card -or- SiS370 4x AGP Video Card
Onboard USB expansion module

XP will not install. Period. I've tried XP Home OEM, XP Home Retail,
XP Pro. All the same reults. When it gets to the part "Installing
Devices", 34 minutes remaining, it hangs. Power Off, resume install,
repeats same behavior. I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware failure,
as I can perform a clean install of Win2k and all is fine. I can
install ME and it works (for as well as you can expect ME to work). I
even installed Win98SE, and it worked. No issues unless I try to
install XP.

Tonight I just left it sit and it eventually dumped with a
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and a STOP: 0x0000007A. The message is:

*****************************************************************************
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent
damage to your computer.

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007A (0xE103E4E8, 0xC000000E, 0xBF92A0F9, 0x00C3B860)

*** win32k.sys - Address BF92A0F9 base at BF800000, Datestamp

Beginning dump of physical memory.
*****************************************************************************

I enabled extended boot POST and it found no memory errors. I've seen
a lot of posts on here pointing to corrupt virtual memory pages, etc,
but I don't know if that applies here or not -- I can't even get
booted into Windows. I've also seen where mention has been made of
outdated drivers for certain peripheral cards, and to get the updated
drivers from the vendor websites. I don't know how that will help me,
as again, I'm not yet into Windows. I've even seen reference to
downloading a newer copy of the win32k.sys file ... but ... how do I
use that for the install?

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know. Worst case
I go back to Win2k but to me that seems like I admit defeat, and ....
well, you know. Thanks.

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Thanks for the information. Looks like I got it ... the problem
apparently was the BIOS setting "PnP OS Installed?". It was set to
'Y' (considering I was installing Windows) but I guess it was having
IRQ conflicts or something. I set it to 'N' to let the BIOS assign the
IRQs and voila ... installed seamlessly. Thanks.
