Toshiba Satellite laptop and Netgear does not see Router

I have the desktop and laptop while trying remedies 1 foot from each other
and from the router.

When I do nslookup from CMD on Laptop I get:

Deault server unknown
Address 127.0.0.1

I have tried to set it on the laptop manually to 192.168.0.2 and it gets me
in ipconfig big 0's for IP address and subnet

At this point I suggest that you just "start over", let the hardware
do what it's designed to do, for you, instead of sweating over this.

In "Local Area Connection" Properties you can just set the "Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP)", Properties, to "Obtain an IP address
automatically", "Obtain DNS server address automatically", and
"Automatic private IP address". After that, reboot and you should
have correct parameters sent from the router through it's DHCP
functionality.

Hi, again. I got it to work, but never with Automatically etc.

I had to put in the numbers 192.186.0.1 etc etc and also in the DNS server.
Only then would it FINALLY work again. At least last night. This morning I am
sending you this from the Desktop via the Netgear Router MR314.

I noticed though that access to the Internet and Mail stops on the Laptop
the moment I turn on WEP for protection. Nothing connects then. When I turn
it OFF, all is fine again.

Do you have an explanation for that?

Make sure you have both points set to use the same encryption level,
and the same key.

There are a lot of networking & wireless guides on the 'net, you might
do a Google search for some.

It is punishing you for top-posting. Your reply goes after the
material to which you are replying, with non-germane material
deleted.

The laptop card should've came with a configuration utility, along
with the driver... the same utility that shows signal strength, among
other things.

The router interface you accessed previously, through the browser,
http://192.168.0.1 , is the 2nd place to configure the encryption
level (bit depth) and choose (invent) a key-string, using that
key-string for both the router and notebook card.

We seem to be jumping around in various things, while it would be
easier for both of us for you to visit a website detailing the setup
of a wireless network from beginning to end. Do a Google search to
find these networking guides, or there may be some of this info at the
link I posted previously, at the top of this post.

Thank you KONI. You have been most helpful.
I finally did get all WEP enabled on both machines and the SSID changed.

BUT the procedure was not clearly described at all and I spent maybe 30
minutes with a Tech. support person in INDIA to get it working. Had tried 4
tech. personnel there before and none could help. That is when I asked for
help here.

Thanks again for persistent help, very much appreciated.
