Under my Tools tab of Microsoft Internet Explorer I used
to be able to Internet options and there was a "General"
category, which allowed me to delete internet history.
Now the "General" category is gone, and has been replaced
with a "Security" category, followed by categories such
as "Content, "Advanced" and two others. How do I restore
the "General" category so I can delete the internet
history?

You are actually supposed to have 7 tabs in that window (XP Home).
You could try a System Restore, if you believe that new software could have
caused your problem. See Help and Support. You will need to reinstall
software added after the rollback date, one item at a time.

Or, you can repair IE:

Use Method 1 in the article. You will need your CD.

Neither of these is the correct answer, and are overkill for the problem.
The issue is that various restrictions were placed in the Registry by some
third party program, primarily to keep the user from changing their default
home page.

Sorry. Saw your article too late.

I understand, cimex. Just for reference, a vast majority of problems can
be corrected, without resorting to System Restore. Its a valid tool, but in
my opinion, one that too many people point to, too quickly. Like using a
shotgun to kill a fly. And in this case, the registry restrictions would
still be in place if a repair installation of IE were done.
