Toolbars: how to remove?

How do I remove custom-made Toolbars permanently?

If I Delete them from Tools > Customize > Toolbars tab, Normal.dot doesn't
save, so the Toolbars are still there the next time I open up Word.

I had lines of code in my AutoExec macro that caused them to appear, so I
deleted those lines, so at least the Toolbars don't appear anymore. But they
still exist in Tools > Customize > Toolbars tab.

This is true whether I Delete them from within an ordinary document or from
Normal.dot itself (after opening Normal.dot from within Word).

Thanks.

Why won't Normal.dot save? The only way to remove them permanently is to
remove them from Normal or delete Normal and let a new one be created.

I don't know. It saves when I do various other thing, like add a macro, add a
button to a toolbar, change keyboard shortcuts, etc. But removal of a whole
Toolbar doesn't stimulate a save of Normal.dot.

Follow-up:

I found (as already noted) that removing a custom Toolbar via Tools > Customize
does not trigger a save of Normal.dot, so that the Toolbar is not permanently
removed.

However, if I remove the Toolbar via Format > Styles > Organizer > Toobars tab,
it does trigger a save of Normal.dot, and the Toolbar is gone for good.

Weird.
