Toolbar customization isn't saved

Running Outlook 2003 on Windows XP

When I add a command to the Outlook Standard Toolbar, it works fine until I
shut down the program. When I start it up again, the added command is gone
and the toolbar is back to the way it was. The same thing happens if I just
rearrange the order of the commands -- when I close and restart, the commands
are in the original order.

Any idea why Outlook isn't saving these changes? It's a hassle, for one, and
I'm worried it might mean that something ewlse is going on that I'd rather
not have going on. [NOTE: The problem DOES NOT happen with Word.]

Thanks,

pjs,

Close Outlook, then navigate to the outcmd.dat file (due a search to find
the exact path) and delete it. Restart Outlook and customize to your hearts
content. Outlook will recreate the outcmd.dat file with your new settings.
Copy and save the new outcmd.dat file as outcmd.new. If you loose your
settings again, just delete the bad outcmd.dat file and copy and rename your
saved outcmd.new file to outcmd.dat. Remember to copy and rename the
outcmd.dat file any time you change your settings so that you always have a
backup of your latest changes.

Thanks for your solution. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I closed
Outlook, renamed outcmd.dat in my Outlook folder in Documents and Settings,
and restarted Outlook. I made a few toolbar customizations, closed Outlook,
and opened it back up. The customizations were nowhere to be seen.

I used Outlook for six years on a previous computer and never ran into this
problem. I'm wondering as much about WHY it's happening as about how to fix
it. If OUtlook isn't recognizing or reading from this file when it starts up,
what else is it not doing?

pjs,

I'm not sure why the procedure didn't work for you. Did you check the
properties of the new outcmd.dat file to see if it was assigned to Outlook?
If it was, I'm at a loss. If not, some other program is hijacking the file
or the file extension.

I did double check that. On my computer, DAT files aren't assigned to
Outlook or to any other particular program. That's because a number of
applications, from Internet Explorer to Ad-Aware to Adobe Contribute all
create and read DAT files. I'm afraid that assignoing DAT files to Outlook
will cause problems with the others.

That said, I know that Outlook is reading the correct outcmd.dat file, that
the file is NOT read only, and that I have full permission (it's a networked
work computer) to read, write, and otherwise modify the file.

So I'm as stumped as you are!
