Tool bar information

On the right side of the tool bar, why does it show
different programs running in the background? also, is
there a reason that we should be aware of what's going on
in the background??

I'm taking my first computer class and am trying to
figure out all of the things I'm not sure about.

In XP it is called the Notification Area. Good luck in class.
