Too Many Processes

My Internet Explorer has a ton of pop-ups to the point
where the IE freezes. When I look at the processes running
using task manager I see 35 applications. Total CPU usage
is often 100%. Question 1 - how do I figure out which
are "real" proceses and which are pop-ups, virus, etc.
Question 2 - I think there is a way to temporarily disable
specific processes (not thru task manager) that would
allow me to test which proceeses are causing my jam up.
