Does anyone know how to remove some of the icons on the taskbar (in the
corner by the clock)? Ther are really too many, and I'm not even sure how
they got there to begin with.
Thanks,
Micelle

Hi,

Disable the associated program from loading at startup and the icon will not
be there. The icon is an indicator that the program is loaded into memory
and is ready to go.

These are the programs which loads when Windows start. You can safely remove
but you must know that the program you are removing is not required on
Windows Startup.

First of all, check your Startup folder. See if there is any program that
you don't want to be load into memory at Windows startup and remove them.

To do this:

1. Click Start - All Programs (or Programs)
2. Point to Startup
3. Right Click on the shortcut that you don't want and click Delete

Further:

1. Click Start - Run
2. Type MSCONFIG and press enter
3. Click the Startup tab. Here you will see a list of the programs which
loads with window.
4. Uncheck the program that you don't want to be load with window startup.

Carefully uncheck the programs. Especially your Anti Virus, Spyware and
Adwares. They must be load with Windows for your safety.

Best of luck and let us know.

Those are actually in the system tray ("notification area"), not the
taskbar, and you _can_ remove them.

Right-click on the actual taskbar (not the "notification area") and
select Properties. Check "Hide inactive icons" and click "Customize".
Choose "Always hide" for the ones you want, er, to hide always. :)

Seeing the other responses, I see that we took "too many icons"
different ways. I assumed that you wanted to keep running the same
programs and reduce the clutter; others assumed you wanted to run
fewer programs. You may in fact want to do both.

I'm sorry for the confusion (obviously I am not a computer guru). Apparently,
I have too many icons in my system tray, not my taskbar. By too many icons, I
mean there are a bunch of tiny icons near my clock that I rarely use. I do
want to keep the programs in my computer, but do not want them all in that
corner. Out of the 11 icons that are there, I only need 3 or 4 all the time.
How do I get rid of them(meaning take them off the screen, not delete them
from my computer entirely.) I tried hiding them, but that only puts them
behind the arrow. I want them GONE.
Thanks for your help.

If you didn't see the response then right click on the bar. Select
properties. Check hide inactive icons. Click customize and you can select
always hide, always show, or hide when inactive (default) for each icon.

See my response about pesky startup applications. That should do it - follow
the link and there are clearly defined methods to rid yourself of all of
those programs and prevent them from loading on boot and into your
notification area (the area near the clock). There are other responses too
that will give you alternative ways to do this. I prefer a tiny third party
application so that things can easily be disabled without any warning
message on reboot and, if wanted, they can be re-enabled again.

I did that! But it only hides them behind the arrow, not totally. I want them
off the system tray completely.
Thanks, Micelle
