Too long of character names

The server that I am uploading to only accepts up to 32 characters. The
theme that I am using often sets the buttons and banners as being longer than
what is accepted. I assume that I can change these but I am not sure how and
the process to do this properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You need to make your page/file names as short as possible to try and stay within 32 character
limitation imposed by your web host, or you need to switch web host if you want to use themes.

I have the page/file names as short as possible....only a few letters...it is
the huge extra part of the file that front page defaults for putting on the
buttons. Is there any way to shorten them? That is what my problem is
presently...

You can manually rename all of the files, but if you change the navigation structure you will again
have to do it.

Would it be better then to wait until I get it all created and then adjust
the name of what are too long? Won't changing the names affect the
navigation ability and create errors?

Yes, but remember if you make any changes to the navigation structure at any time afterwards, the
files will be re-written with the longer file names.

As a guide the _derived folder(s) filenames generated by FP themes can require up to 19 Extra Characters in addition to the Combined
Length of your "filename.ext" & "theme_name"
- so if your server/pc limit is 32 you only have 13 characters TOTAL for both!
Edit your theme and save it as a very short name (say 2-3 characters)
That would leave you 10-11 characters for all file names (or 6-7 characters w/o the .htm)
