too few pixels

I updated from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. The display
settings offer only 16 colors and a choice of 540 x 480 or
800 x 600 pixels.

The colors are washed out and the pictures indistinct on
both the internet and word 2000, lacking detail. They were
good on Windows 98.

Anybody know what's wrong and what I should do?

You may need to reinstall the drivers for your video card?
