Graphics card resolutions

My graphics card supports a max resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels at 32 bit
color for the plug and play monitor (the one integrated into the laptop),
but only 800 x 600 pixels at 8 mit color for the VGA output. This was a bad
design, since the monitor on my lapop supports a max resolution of 1280 x
800 pixels. Is there any way to "switch" some of the resolution and color
quality in windows so I can get better resolutions and higher color quality
on the VGA out while switching some of the resolution capabilities from the
plug and play monitor that it can't support?

Your situation seems a bit odd. I would install the very latest video
drivers for your video card. Also install the dedicated .inf file for your
external monitor (available as a download from all reputable monitor
manufacturers). Then the operating system will know what your external
monitor is capable of using in the way of maximum video resolution and
refresh rates.
