TOC1

Sue

I'm using Word 2002 SP1 in a Windows XP Pro environment.

I have a document with more than 10 level 1 headings.
I've selected TOC1 for the Table of Contents.

Every Time I update the toc, entries for chapters 10 and
above indent more than the the one for chapters 1 through
9.

I've cleared formating for the chapter headings and re-
applied the heading 1 format. I've deleted the entire
TOC and redid it. Nothing works.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Sue,

I suspect the problem you are having is with the arbitrary tab sets that
Word adds to TOCs, completely independent of the TOC1 style definition. If
it is, the solution is to toggle your TOC field and add a " \w " switch,
which prevents that annoying behavior.

Chad,

I tried the "\w" switch, but that right justified the
entire table of contents. Do I need to add something
else to the switch?

Thanks!

That's bizarre. Could it be that you are not including page numbers in your
TOC, but your TOC style(s) still have a right-aligned tab at the right
margin? Whatever the case, I think you can solve the problem by adding a
left-aligned tab to your TOC style(s), which is far enough right to leave
sufficient space between the largest paragraph numbers (i.e., 10 and above)
and the text that follows them. Better yet, use a hanging indent instead
of, or in addition to, the tab set.

You need to increase the hanging indent/tab stop for the TOC 1 style. This
is set very small in all the TOC styles.
