TOC in Word - numbering malfunction

I have encountered a problem with the automatic table of contents in Word.

Depending on the computer the recipient opens the document on, the automatic
page numbering behaves very strangely. Sometimes it just fails to update
(resulting in '1' for each entry in the contents. Other times it puts a
strange set of numbers bearing no relation to the document (e.g. numbering up
into the hundreds for a 30 page document!). Naturally, it behaves impeccably
on my computer.

Any clues as to why this should be?

I've encountered this problem too. It seems to be a problem when sending
documents through Outlook. If you update the TOC page numbers on a document
in Word 2003, then send it somewhere via Outlook, the page numbers will be
messed up when it is opened from the e-mail. I have found the same problem
with the autotext for the number of pages in a document.

Has anyone found a solution?
