Better for the pc? a
Better for real life? either one

You forgot a choice in your list: turn off at end of day or when leaving
for an extended period of time.

I've seen this question many times in many forums and Newsgroups for many
years. The answer is always the same. Give or take a small percentage half
will say leave it on, half will say turn it off.

FWIW I personally am in the "leave it on" camp. I use power management to
turn off monitors harddrives etc...

My computers seem to last as long (or longer?) as others in my family who
turn them off.

The glass is half full. The glass is half empty. The debate rages on for eternity. Quite frankly I'm pleased to see that in this economy some have money to waste or burn. You certainly don't leave your TV on all the time. I can't afford the electricity, no matter how little, and with the hardy components of today there isn't any damage caused by turning things on and off. Maybe there was in the time of vacuum tubes and such. {:~)

There are arguments on both sides of the question, and very
little agreement. personally I take a middle ground. I leave it
on all day, but turn it off at night.

Choice b. I'm an old Windows 95er and old habits die hard. But my
rationale, FWIW, is that completely powering down the system at least once
daily (say, overnight) after "hot and heavy" use permits necessary internal
"housecleaning" of the pc, either at the actual power removal or at boot-up
next time it's turned on. This what works for me.

I do both. Our master box which is a file and printer server is on
24x7 so that we don't have to run around the house turning it on when
needed. The other three boxes are turned off at night and when not
needed for extended periods to save electricity.

Because my house has no A/C
I leave it on in winter and shut it down
in summer.

No problems in either mode
unless it gets too hot then it beeps and I shut it down.

5 weeks is the longest it has been up in winter.
With heavy usage.
