To reinstall or not that is the question

Hi

I have some problems with my xp and wonder if I need to reinstall?

I run xp home edition ( OEM) and recently am encountering some problems

I recently installed the hard drive from my old machine into my new one with
some help from people here and it installed perfectly but since then I have
noticed some problems when i start up

I get the boot screen up with the same options i used to
xp
recovery console
Tuneup utilities (added after I installed tune up utilities 2007)

and the clock starts to tick away as normal. However I cant choose which
option anymore (keyboard has no effect ) and f8 doesnt work either . So
system waits til clock has ticked down then screen goes blank then a large
white progress bar appears at the bottom then screen goes clank for 30
seconds .

It then boots ok but clearly something isnt right

Any ideas?

Also my system restore no longer works?

Thanks in advance

Did you move a drive containing XP to the new system and are trying to run
from that previous installation, or is the drive you installed from the old
computer now a slave drive in the new system?

Yes it did have xp installed on old drive but I formatted the old drive
after I installed it and have it set as a slave drive but I think I
first had it set as a master as my new pc drive is sata and the old one
is ide and someone told me thats how i should do it but i sought advice
here and was told to set it as slave

Ok, so to recap, you are not running from the OS installed on the older
drive. So exactly when did these problems start? Did the system work fine
before the old drive was installed? I think a reinstall is premature.

To summarize the problems:

1. On boot up the screen stops at the XP boot loader screen but you can't
select an option. After a set time it will boot into XP.

Check the settings in the BIOS for USB legacy support. Is this a USB
keyboard? Have you tried a PS2 keyboard? Did the problem start after you
installed the Tune Up Utilities? (IMO there is no point to using a suite of
tune up utilities. XP has everything you need to keep it running well. )

2. System restore is not functioning?
In what way is it not functioning? Error messages? Are automatic restore
points being created? See Bert Kinney's System Restore page:

System never did any of this before i installed hard drive but start up did
seem to slow a bit after the tune up option appeared.

In addition the system now takes a lot longer to shut down and often i have
to ckick shutdown twice?

I have read the system restore page followed all the tips and ended up
reinstalling it so i guess that will sort it hopefully ( event messages were
same as i got when i tried to restore - " A restoration to " blah blah"
restore point failed. No changes have been made to your sytem"

Im sorry if my info is too detailed or confusing just trying to give as much
as I can

I put the extra hard drive in to copy a perfect C over as back up but
pointless if my windows is snafu

Thabks again
